Dr Joe Lyske’s PhD thesis outlines the concept, research and analysis behind what the world now knows as DAACI, an original tool to assist media composers to write film music generatively.
When Joe started his research at Queen Mary University of London, there had been various attempts at generative compositional mechanisms over the years. None had been successful at communicating specific emotional connotations to a listener. There was therefore a significant opportunity to create a system that could satisfy the musical demands of various media such as user generated content and games, as well as assist media composers themselves through a supportive composition tool.
The overarching aim of Joe’s research and accompanying study was to outline and assess his new method of generative composition.
His thesis first describes the principle of meta-composition as an alternative to traditional composition. This is where analysts and composers are invited to think beyond specific note choices, but to consider the driving vision behind why they are choosing the notes. This method of reasoning is then given a structured framework called “Heresy”. This framework is a generative mechanism for creating film music cues from a given set of briefing requirements. A method of analysis is then offered that shows how to break down a composition heuristically for the Heresy framework. The resultant tool that is spawned from these concepts is used by 10 professional composers who have judged the output of the tool to be of a professional standard, and effective at communicating chord schemes, form, and texture.
This method of composition offers a way to empower music makers to meet the rapidly growing demand for personalised music. It does this by offering a dynamic composition tool for writing music “on the fly”, as well as alleviating the strain put on professional composers when trying to compose to tight deadlines. Ultimately, this composition system offers a powerful framework for self-reflection through a new type of music analysis that offers refinement of intention through a generative mechanism.
